D. Amélia de Orleans
The
Queen D. Amélia of Orleans and Bragança (1865-1951)
got married with the King D. Carlos I and was the last queen
of Portugal (during 1884-1908), being contemporary of the
construction of the Medical School building, which nowadays
belongs to the Faculty of Medical Sciences.
It was notable her role in the fields of culture and assistance,
standing out from the latter the support she gave to the
struggle against tuberculosis, that began in 1889 and developed
to form the National Assistance to the Tuberculous people,
and the creation of the Bacteriological Institute in 1892,
later named as Câmara Pestana.
In 1893, the Queen founded in Alcântara, the first
modern dispensary in a building of its own, which still
exists and has its balcony painted in one of the panels
of glazed tiles. Its purpose was to give support to poor
children until 12 years old. The main goal of the Dispensary
of Alcântara was to supply the children with milk
and food, cares and advices on hygiene, medical care and
medicines. Dr. Augusto da Silva Carvalho was its first director,
the nuns gave support and nursing care., the Queen and Countess
of Sabugosa took charge of the domiciliary visits in a genuine
social service, that extended the dispensary to the needed
civil community.
